Slate
stone is typically the softest of the aformentioned stones.
It is formed in layers and will appear to flake as you
handle it. It is recommended that your installer goes
over each tile before setting it with a stiff wire brush
to remove the majority of flakes. This will help avoid
post install flaking which is always worrisome to the
homeowner. Some slates (quartzite slates) are actually
decomposing granite and are much more durable than your
average layered slate. |
Slate comes in a variety of colors and patterns. Gauged
is a term that means one side of the tile is grooved to
allow for an easier lay. This will also result in a closer
tolerance of thickness between the individual tiles. Gauged
slates are typically always over $2.00 / s.f. |
Slate stone tiles generally come in sizes of 12"x
12", 16"x 16", and some are offered in
24"x 24". One ton crates of 'random cut' slate
in many of the same colors can also be purchased. One
ton typically covers 200-225 s.f. and is usually around
$600.00 per ton. A handful of slate tiles come with a
polished finish and are some of the most interesting tiles
we've ever worked with, they are truly stunning but usually
quite a bit more expensive ($5.00-$6.50 / s.f.) |
Installation
of slate tile is generally less expensive than other stone
tile installations. This is because the stone requires
a looser grout joint (typically 1/4") and is similar
to a ceramic tile installation. Sanded grout must be used.
Slate's rough texture lends itself nicely to outdoor applications
but looks beautiful inside in the right settings as well.
